Hawai’ian Professor’s Workshops at Lugansk state institute of culture and arts

Women’s day gave the lecturers of Theory and Practice of Translation/Interpreting Chair an unusual present. Exactly that day the American Delegation composed of Attaché of American Embassy in Ukraine Fransis Westbruk and Professor of English Philology of Hawai’i International College Seleena Harkness came to Lugansk.

The main aim of Fransis Westbruk’s first arrival in Lugansk was acquaintance with Lugansk state institute of culture and arts and opening scientific methodological seminar held by Seleena Harkness on the basis of Theory and Practice of Translation/Interpreting Chair.

The first day of staying in Lugansk young, vigorous, and creative Seleena Harkness gained sympathies of rector Valery Filippov and all lecturers of the Chair.

Intensive work had started at once. March 9-11, 2011 Seleena Harkness conducted workshops for the teachers and lectures of Lugansk state institute and culture and arts, East-Ukrainian national university and Lugansk national university. The workshops were devoted to methodological aspects of teaching English, literature, drama techniques, creative writing and public speech in foreign language. Subjects of workshops for lecturers included urgent problems of teaching English as a foreign language. The lecturers were listening to presentations, discussing innovative technologies, and performing creative tasks.

March 12, 2011 the workshop of Seleena Harkness was attended teachers of secondary and specialized schools of Lugansk city and region. In Seleena’s opinion, school teachers of Lugansk region have great creative potential which promotes professional development and stimulates productive work with pupils.

From March 14 till March 16 Seleena Harkness worked with students of Interpreting department during 5 hour a day. Intensive work compensated with interesting tasks, creative performances of students, and also friendly atmosphere of understanding between Seleena and students.

On the 17th and 18th of March Seleena Harkness participated in the work of International scientific practical conference “Linguistics. Communication. Education.”, taking part in the work of seminars and “circular tables”. She also gave master-classes for conference participants who came from different parts of Ukraine.

During the whole stay in Lugansk Seleena not only worked fruitfully with students and lecturers, but also acquainted with our country, fell in love with our culture, music, traditions and customs.
